How to improve the long-term prognosis of dialysis patients

Despite significant improvements in hemodialysis therapy in recent years, cardiovascular disease (CVD) remains the leading cause of death for dialysis patients. Today, one in two patients dies from CVD. The risk of death from CVD is especially high for younger patients when compared to the general population of the same age.

Risk factors

Dialysis patients share several common risk factors for CVD with the rest of the population including diabetes mellitus, high blood pressure, smoking, chronic inflammation and elevated blood lipids (hyperlipidemia). In addition, dialysis patients are exposed to a broad range of additional risk factors that can lead to increased arteriosclerosis (pathologic modifications of the vascular wall) and left ventricular hypertrophy (enlargement of the left heart chamber).

Cardioprotective Hemodialysis

Within its Cardioprotective Hemodialysis program, Fresenius Medical Care develops hemodialysis products designed to reduce CVD and further improve dialysis patients' long-term prognosis. One of the key elements of this concept is ONLINE-Hemodiafiltration (ONLINE-HDF).
